Spot the Direct Object

Ask "verb + what?" or "verb + whom?" The answer is the direct object. If there is no answer, the verb is intransitive and has no direct object.

Vocabulary

Direct Object: Receives the action of the verb.

Verb: Shows action or state of being.

Common Mistakes

• Identifying the indirect object instead of the direct object
• Confusing a predicate noun (after "be") with a direct object

• Identify verbs and direct objects in stories.
• Write sentences with specific direct objects.
• Create sentences about animals with direct objects.

Parent Tip

Ask your child to find the direct object in sentences you read together.
