Spot the Subject

Teaching Notes

Ask "Who or what is doing the action?" The answer is the simple subject. Ignore any describing words around it.

Vocabulary

Subject: Who or what the sentence is about.

Simple Subject: The main noun or pronoun in the subject.

Common Mistakes

• Writing the full noun phrase instead of just the noun head
• Being misled by a nearby noun inside a prepositional phrase

Extension Activities

• Find subjects in song lyrics.
• Draw a picture of the subject.
• Identify subjects in comic strips.

Parent Tip

Point out the main person or thing in everyday sentences you say.
