Teaching Notes
Clap the two sounds at the start of each blend word to make the consonant cluster explicit. Blend sorting builds phonemic awareness and prepares students for decoding multi-syllable words.
Vocabulary
Consonant Blend: Two or more consonants together where each sound is heard (e.g., "bl" in blue).
Initial Blend: A consonant blend that appears at the beginning of a word.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing blends with digraphs (e.g., "sh" is a digraph, not a blend).
- Sorting by the first letter only, ignoring the second consonant.
- Missing the blend when words begin with a soft sound (e.g., "sw" in swim).
Differentiation
SupportSay each word aloud and isolate just the first two sounds before asking the student to sort.
ChallengeAsk students to write a new word for each blend category without looking at the word bank.
