Teaching Notes

Ask two questions: "Who or what?" (subject) and "What does it do?" (verb). If either is missing, it is a fragment.

Vocabulary
Sentence: A group of words with a subject and verb.
Fragment: A group of words missing a subject or verb.
Common Mistakes
  • Marking a long fragment as a sentence because it sounds ok
  • Forgetting that a verb alone (no subject) is a fragment
Extension Activities
  • Sort word groups into sentence/fragment.
  • Identify missing parts in fragments.
  • Create your own sentences and fragments.
Parent Tip

Read sentences and fragments aloud; ask which one sounds complete.
