Punctuating Direct Speech
Students rewrite sentences that contain direct speech, adding quotation marks around the exact words spoken and the correct comma between the speech and its tag. Starting from correctly formed examples and working toward trickier structures (speech tag in the middle), students learn the complete pattern.

Put " " around the exact words spoken. Use a comma between the spoken words and the speech tag (said, asked, shouted…).

Draw quotation marks as 'speech bubbles with tails' — everything inside the bubble is what the person says. The comma (or period/question mark) goes INSIDE the closing speech bubble.
