A complex sentence has one independent clause and at least one dependent clause introduced by a subordinating conjunction. The dependent clause cannot stand alone.
Vocabulary
Simple Sentence: Contains one independent clause.
Complex Sentence: Contains one independent and one dependent clause.
Common Mistakes
- Calling any long sentence "complex"
- Confusing a relative clause (who, which, that) with a subordinating conjunction
