It's vs Its

One of the most confused pairs in English — students fill in the correct form in context. "It's" is always "it is" or "it has"; "its" is always the possessive. Every question provides enough context for the student to test by substituting "it is" mentally. No guessing possible.

Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes

Teach the 'it is' substitution test as a rule, not a trick. If 'it is' fits in the sentence, the apostrophe form (it's) is correct. If it sounds wrong, use 'its'.

Vocabulary
it's: Contraction for 'it is' or 'it has'.
its: Shows possession; belonging to it.
Common Mistakes
  • Using it's everywhere because 'it looks fancier'
  • Using its for the contraction
Differentiation
SupportWrite 'it is' above every blank first. Then decide if it fits.
ChallengeWrite four sentences — two using it's correctly, two using its correctly. Swap with a partner to check.
Extension Activities
  • Identify 'it's' or 'its' in sentences.
  • Write sentences using both words.
  • Create a story using 'it's' and 'its'.
Parent Tip

Ask your child to use 'it's' and 'its' in sentences about pets.
