First/Spelling Word Sort

✂️ Suffix Sort

Sort words by their suffix — -ful (full of), -less (without), or -ness (state of being). Students learn how a small word part at the end changes the meaning and part of speech of the base word.

Quick Tip
A suffix is added to the end of a word and changes its meaning. "-ful" means full of, "-less" means without, and "-ness" turns a word into a noun (a state or quality).

Teaching Notes

Pair this with the Prefix Sort — students who understand un-/re-/pre- are ready to layer suffixes. Emphasise that -ful and -less are often opposites with the same base (hopeful/hopeless), which makes a great extension discussion.

Vocabulary
Suffix: A word part added to the end of a base word that changes its meaning.
Base Word: The main word before any prefix or suffix is added (e.g., "care" in "careful").
-ful: A suffix meaning "full of" (e.g., joyful = full of joy).
-less: A suffix meaning "without" (e.g., careless = without care).
-ness: A suffix that turns an adjective into a noun meaning "the state of being" (e.g., kindness = the state of being kind).
Common Mistakes
  • Confusing -ful and -less when they share the same base word (e.g., hopeful vs hopeless).
  • Missing the spelling change before -ness (e.g., "happy" → "happiness", not "happyness").
  • Treating any word ending in those letters as having the suffix (e.g., "fullness" has -ness but also -ful as part of the base).
Differentiation
SupportUnderline the suffix in each word before sorting. Then read just the base word — what does it mean without the ending?
ChallengeAsk students to write the opposite of each -ful word using -less, and explain the meaning difference.
Discussion Questions
  • If "hopeful" means full of hope, what do you think "hopeless" means?
  • How does adding "-ness" change the word "kind" — what part of speech does it become?
  • Can you think of a word that uses "-ful" where you would NOT want to be that thing?
Extension Activities
  • Scan a page of a book — highlight every -ful, -less, and -ness word you find.
  • Create "word families": write the base word, then add -ful, -less, and -ness to each.
  • Write a short paragraph using one word from each suffix category.
Parent Tip

Ask your child: "If careful means full of care, what does careless mean?" Then see if they can make up a new -ful and -less pair.
