Quick Tip
Many English words come from Greek and Latin roots. When you know what the root means, you can figure out the meaning of the whole word — even words you've never seen before!

Teaching Notes
Teach roots as a decoding tool — once students know "bio" means life, they can unlock biology, biome, antibiotic, biodiversity independently. Ask: "What do all these words have to do with life?" before sorting.
Vocabulary
Root: A word part from Greek or Latin that carries the core meaning (e.g., "bio" = life).
bio: Greek root meaning "life" (e.g., biology = the study of life).
geo: Greek root meaning "earth" (e.g., geology = the study of the earth).
graph: Greek root meaning "write" (e.g., autograph = written by oneself).
Common Mistakes
- "biography" contains both bio AND graph — it is excluded from the word list for this reason.
- "geography" contains both geo AND graph — also excluded.
- Students may confuse "diagram" — the "gram" part is a variant of "graph" meaning written/drawn.
Differentiation
SupportUnderline the root in each word before sorting. Write the root meaning beside it, then decide the category.
ChallengeAsk students to find two more words for each category in a textbook or dictionary and explain how the root meaning applies.
Discussion Questions
- If "bio" means life, what do you think "antibiotic" does to living things (bacteria)?
- How does knowing "geo" means earth help you understand "geothermal"?
- If "graph" means write, why is a photograph called that? (light writes the image)
Extension Activities
- Find 3 words with each root in a science or social studies textbook.
- Research one new Greek or Latin root (e.g., "tele", "micro", "phon") and find 4 words that contain it.
- Create a root web: write the root in the centre and connect all the words you can find.
Parent Tip
Point out roots in everyday life — "geology" at a science museum, "paragraph" in a book. Ask: "Which root do you see? What does it mean?"
