Teaching Notes

This is the GR2 extension of Count the Blocks (GR1). Pair with physical Base 10 manipulatives — show students that 10 rods stacked = 1 flat, and 10 flats = 1 thousand. Connect to money: $1 bill (flat), dime (rod), penny (one).

Common Mistakes
  • Counting each row of a flat as 10 rather than the whole flat as 100
  • Forgetting to include zeros for missing place values (e.g. writing 23 instead of 203)
  • Counting the ones before the hundreds — always count largest to smallest
Differentiation
SupportUse a place value chart. Have students write H, T, O columns and fill in each count before writing the final number.
ChallengeAsk students to write the number in expanded form: 234 = 200 + 30 + 4.
