Some purchases (like a birthday gift) could arguably fit more than one category — the answer key uses the most common-sense fit.

Vocabulary
Category: A group that similar things belong to, like Food or Entertainment.
Expense: Money spent on something.
Common Mistakes
  • Putting every purchase into "Entertainment" without considering the other categories
Differentiation
SupportCross off each category once it has been used twice.
ChallengeAdd 2 new purchases and categorize them without a word bank.
Discussion Questions
  • Which category would you spend the most on? The least?
  • Is a birthday gift Entertainment or something else?
Extension Activities
  • Sort a week of pretend purchases into the 5 categories.
Parent Tip

Sort a real receipt together into categories like Food, Fun, and Savings.
