How does AI learn from examples?
AI does not understand an example the way a person does. It studies many examples, looks for patterns, and uses those patterns to predict an answer.
1. See examples
An AI is shown examples with labels, such as photos marked cat or dog.
2. Find patterns
It notices details that often appear together, such as ears, shapes, colors, or words.
3. Make a prediction
When it sees something new, it uses those patterns to make its best guess.
4. People check
A person checks the result because examples can be incomplete and AI can make mistakes.
Try this idea
The examples help with a guess, but a person should still check whether the answer makes sense.

Quick Tip
Teacher Resources
Teaching Notes
Use the examples to discuss what a model can learn and what its examples cannot prove. Reinforce that a pattern-based guess can still be wrong.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking more examples guarantee a correct answer
- Assuming examples prove something about every case
- Forgetting to check labels
Differentiation
Discussion Questions
- Why do labels matter?
- What can a model not conclude from a small set of examples?
